AI Shopping Trust: Why Creator Reviews Matter

Imagine asking an AI assistant which running shoe suits wet city streets. A product page can list the sole material. A creator review can show what the shoe feels like after an hour in the rain. Shoppers may value both kinds of evidence.

What did the IAB study find?

On 9 September 2026, the Interactive Advertising Bureau published a global study about creator perspectives in AI shopping recommendations. It surveyed 2,200 people in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico and India who had used AI for shopping research during the previous three months. Read the IAB announcement.

Among those surveyed, 56% said they preferred AI-generated shopping recommendations that included creator or influencer perspectives. Sixty-five per cent said credible creator reviews increased their confidence in AI recommendations.

Reach was not the main trust signal. Everyday consumers were the most trusted creator type at 52%, followed by professional reviewers at 43% and subject specialists at 37%. Respondents highlighted credibility, consistency, expertise and independence or sponsorship transparency.

What does the research not tell us?

The sample covers people already using AI for shopping research. It does not represent every shopper, and Türkiye was not one of the five markets. The findings describe consumer preferences; they do not reveal how a specific AI system selects sources or ranks products.

A brand therefore should not turn the result into a promise such as “creator videos will make our products appear in AI answers.” A better conclusion is simpler: evidence from a credible person can help a shopper evaluate a product, especially when the claim is specific and verifiable.

Five practical steps for brands

  1. Choose experience over follower count. Match the creator to a real customer question. For a hiking jacket, fabric performance and fit experience matter more than a large but unrelated audience.
  2. Record useful details. Ask the creator to explain the test conditions, product version, benefits and limitations. Avoid vague praise that a shopper cannot verify.
  3. Make the evidence accessible. Add an accurate transcript, descriptive title and summary when publishing video. Connect the creator content to the relevant product or guide page.
  4. Keep claims consistent. Price, materials, availability and specifications should agree across the product page, feed, campaign and creator brief.
  5. Disclose the relationship. Make sponsorship, gifted products and affiliate links clear. Transparency is part of the trust signal described in the study.

A simple example

Suppose a skincare brand claims that a moisturiser works well under makeup. A useful creator review can show the application method, skin type, waiting time and observed result. The product page should separately state verified ingredients, directions and warnings. The creator provides experience; the brand remains responsible for accurate product information.

This is an illustrative example, not a measured client result.

How should teams measure the work?

Track more than views. Record which questions each asset answers, visits to the connected product page, qualified actions and assisted conversions. Check whether brand and product descriptions remain accurate when they appear in search and AI tools. Compare results over a defined period and avoid attributing every change to one creator asset.

Google’s current guidance for generative AI search still recommends valuable, original content and sound technical SEO. Read Google’s AI search guidance. Creator evidence works best when the underlying page is clear, accessible and useful.
